Signs of a Problem with Your Sewer Lines

If you’re like most homeowners, you don’t give much thought to your sewer lines, but in reality, they are one of the most important components in your home. All of the water you use in your home and all of the drains in your house are dependent on your sewer lines, and if there is a problem, significant damage could occur. Fortunately, by knowing the signs of a problem and calling your 24-hour plumber in Chicago for inspection and repair, you can often head off major problems. Dial your plumber if you notice any of these symptoms of a sewer line failure.

Multiple Clogged Drains

It’s not unusual to have one drain get clogged. Toilet paper can easily clog toilets, while grease can cause a backup in your kitchen drain. Although you may need to call your emergency plumber if a clogged drain causes a water overflow, in most cases a single clogged drain is not cause for concern. Multiple clogged drains are a different story. When more than one drain clogs at one time, the problem is likely to be in the main sewer line rather than the individual pipes that are attached to them. If some of the drains that are clogged are ones that don’t get used often, such as a guest bathroom sink, it is even more likely that your sewer lines are to blame.

Bubbling Drains

When drains are clogged, water and air mix in the drain and cause bubbles as the water tries to get past the clog. Occasionally, bubbles may appear because of a minor, temporary block, in which case, they are usually not a reason to worry. If you notice bubbles in a drain, test it for a block by filling the sink or tub with a little water and then watching it drain. You can do the same thing by looking for bubbles in your toilet after you flush. If you see bubbles again, call your plumber out to evaluate your sewer line, especially if you see bubbles in more than one drain.

Water Backups

If water drains fine in one drain, but then bubbles up in another, a blockage in your main sewage line could be forcing that water back up. For instance, you may flush your toilet and then hear water bubbling up in your sink or run your dishwasher and hear gurgling in a toilet. This means water cannot drain as it should and that your sewer lines should be inspected as soon as possible.
